The Silent Struggle

This collaborative magazine showcases the powerful photographic works of Xavier Kinnier and Angel Phillips, highlighting the internal struggles of mental health experienced by people, particularly in the Norfolk area. It also features an insightful interview with Tiffany Richardson, CEO of Artisan-Preneur Counseling, and her colleague and friend, River.

The need of this project was that students needed to be provided resources to help them with their mental health issues, especially in the Norfolk area.

Need

Solution

The solution was to create a photo magazine showcasing the internal struggles of mental health while also providing insight on potential help in the Norfolk Area.

Design a photo magazine that depicts:

  • Mental Health Photography

  • Displays the types of Mental Health people experience

  • Display how to receive assistance in the Norfolk Area. This was both on and off campus

  • Provide interviews with people who experience this in a school setting and in a business setting

  • Get this displayed physically and digitally on our campus, especially in the Office of Counseling Services.

Application

The research focused on common mental health issues, with a primary emphasis on Norfolk. It also explored local resources, including for-profit, nonprofit, and campus support services. Interviews with the CEO and an employee of Artisan-Preneur Consulting provided insight into balancing work and school.

What was the outcome?

  • Was able to get 15 copies printed plus an additional 6 more for free

  • Was able to get it posted online and have printed posters with QR Codes around campus

  • Printed versions are displayed in the Graphic Design Production room in the Barry Arts Building, the Photography Lab in the Hixon Building, and the Office of Counseling Services (Old Dominion University)

The poster is based on an image I took to show the internal struggle of mental health and how it affects people. My collaborator, Xavier Kinnier, and I decided this would be the perfect centerpiece to advertise our magazine. It also includes a QR code for the magazine digitally, which is free to the public. From there, we have placed all these posters around campus to draw attention to our magazine to spread awareness.

Feedback

  • Some responses we’ve had from classmates and professors have been positive

  • They complimented us (Xavier and I) for it actually looking neat and like a photo magazine

  • Was given feedback from photo professors on how to improve the photo magazine and if we were to do it again, try researching more on layouts

  • Online, we have gotten 96-110 reads (as of Dec. 2024), however, we can’t measure if the feedback was positive or negative due to having no comments.
